About Us
Nellies Scones, known as Nellies, began in 2020 during the lockdown, founded by husband and wife team Mark and Kirsty. At the time, they were running a successful pet care business, but like many small businesses during COVID-19, they were forced to temporarily pause operations.
With a global pandemic unfolding and a newborn baby, their daughter Mya, at home, they decided to pivot into something new. Baking had always been a shared love, especially cream teas, so they turned that passion into a new venture: Nellies Scones was born.
What We Offer
The business originally started with doorstep-delivered cream teas, which quickly became a local favourite. Demand grew fast, and soon more options were added, including savoury teas, ploughman’s boxes, and other homemade bakes.
By 2024, Nellies expanded again with the launch of their scone gift boxes, designed for all occasions. Whether it’s a gift for a mum, auntie, teacher, or friend, the boxes became a popular choice—and they can now be delivered anywhere in the UK.
Our Shed
Fast forward to 2026, and Nellies has taken another step forward with the launch of their cake shed.
And as they put it, it just had to be done.
While scones remain at the heart of the business, the shed now offers a full range of sweet treats including cakes, brownies, cookie pies and more. For those who prefer something a little more indulgent, the sweet bakes have quickly become a favourite with visitors.
Why “Nellies”?
Many people ask where the name comes from. Baking has always been part of Kirsty’s life, especially time spent baking with her grandparents as a child. Her nans were brilliant cooks, known for everything from traditional roasts to homemade cakes.
One of her grandmothers, Nellie, sadly passed away. Naming the business after her felt like a natural tribute, honouring those early memories and the love of baking she helped inspire.
By the Sea
Nellies Scones is based on the southeast Kent coast in the village of Cliffsend. Just a ten-minute walk from the sea and the iconic Viking Ship landmark, the shed sits in a peaceful spot that draws both locals and visitors.
You might even be greeted by their resident cat, Murphy, who has become something of a local celebrity in his own right. Some would say people stop by just as much for him as they do for the bakes.
Today
Six years on, the original pet care business is still thriving alongside a second pet care venture. Their daughter Mya is now six years old and enjoys the benefits of being part of a baking family, especially sampling the weekend leftovers.
Meanwhile, Nellies continues to grow from strength to strength. The cake shed has proven to be a huge success, bringing together the community through homemade treats and a warm welcome.
Nellies is fully insured, professionally trained, and holds a 5-star food hygiene rating, giving customers confidence along with their cakes.
