From Home Baking to a Thriving Cake Shed – The Story of The Mini Bakery

Meet Izzy, 24, the owner of The Mini Bakery in Shrewsbury, and one of the growing number of cake shed owners proving that small, simple ideas can have a huge impact on both communities and personal wellbeing.

How it started 🍰

I’ve always loved baking since I was a little girl. My mum was always in the kitchen, baking from scratch and making amazing birthday cakes, and she’s the one who taught me how to bake.

Two years ago, I was diagnosed with depression, and it was one of the hardest times in my life. Baking became the one thing that could get me out of bed in the morning. It gave me purpose when everything else felt heavy.

There was something powerful about it, seeing people’s faces light up when they tried something I’d made, or watching someone go back for seconds. Those small moments gave me a feeling nothing else ever had.

After receiving so many kind compliments and seeing cake sheds grow in popularity on social media, I decided to take a leap and start my own cake shed a year ago.

I haven’t looked back since.

Life running a cake shed 🧁

One of my favourite parts of running The Mini Bakery is the connection with people.

Every weekend when I post on social media, I get the loveliest comments and messages from people who’ve visited. It genuinely makes my day every time.

I’ve got regulars from my local village, as well as people travelling from all over Shrewsbury just to stop by and try my bakes. Some even pull up in cars just for cake and that feeling never gets old.

It’s honestly the best part of what I do.

More than just baking 💛

What’s surprised me most is how much of a community the cake shed has created.

People don’t just come for cake, they stop for a chat, bring their friends, or discover it as part of a day out. There are kids meeting up, neighbours catching up, and strangers becoming familiar faces.

It’s made me realise just how many people are looking for connection in simple, everyday ways.

Plans for the future 🌿

One day, I’d love to open my own bakery or café, something that feels like a real community space.

Through running my cake shed and working, I’ve seen how many people are lonely or just want a quick chat and a warm moment in their day. I’d love to build something that brings people together even more.

A space where everyone feels welcome. A place for conversation, comfort, and maybe even support for those who are struggling.

Looking back 🩷

For me, running The Mini Bakery has been incredible.

The best part hasn’t been selling out or making money, it’s been proving to myself that I’m capable of running a business despite the challenges I’ve faced, and seeing the positive impact it’s had on my community.

It’s hard work, but I’ve loved every second of it.

If there’s one thing I’d say to anyone struggling, it’s this: try baking. It doesn’t have to be perfect. The fact that you’ve made something and it tastes good, is more than enough.

Thank you 💛

I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported The Mini Bakery over the past year. Every visit, message, and kind word has meant the world.

I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
