Sometimes the best ideas start in the most unexpected places and for Naomi, it all began with her chickens. At the front of her home, Naomi set up a small honesty box to sell spare eggs from her pet hens. It was simple, practical, and worked perfectly, with any extra money going straight back into caring for them. But what started as a humble egg stand soon became something much bigger.
While browsing farming pages online, Naomi discovered the incredible farm stands popular in the US, filled with fresh produce and homemade treats. Inspired, but still only baking occasionally for fun, she didn’t think too much of it… until one bake sale changed everything. After baking for her children’s school Macmillan bake, Naomi received such lovely feedback that people began asking if she sold her bakes or took orders. That moment sparked an idea.
Determined to make it happen, Naomi began researching what she needed to turn her hobby into a business. From gaining qualifications to sorting insurance, registering her food business, and setting up social media—she put in the work. Before long, Naomi’s Home Bakery was officially born, and the orders started rolling in.
In her first year, Naomi threw herself into local events, building her reputation and customer base. At the end of each day, she’d sell leftover bakes through her page and they quickly became a hit locally. That’s when inspiration struck again.
Remembering those American farm stands, Naomi thought why not try selling a few bakes alongside her eggs? She added them to her small egg box one weekend… and everything sold. So she did it again. And again.
Around the same time, Naomi noticed others across the UK creating “cake sheds” using outdoor storage spaces. With her growing following and increasing demand, she knew it was time to level up. So she designed and built her very own custom cake shed right next to her front door.
Now, Naomi’s setup offers a full range of homemade bakes alongside her fresh eggs—and it’s become a much-loved local spot. Through her shed, she’s met so many people in her community and is often recognised as “the cake lady” or “the egg lady” when she’s out and about.
But it’s not just about the bakes. Naomi has also used her cake shed to support local charities, something she finds incredibly rewarding. For her, it’s about more than just selling, it’s about being part of the community and bringing a little joy to people’s day.
